Nathan, FWIW I read Alan's original question and thought exactly the same thing - it sounded like a rhetorical question almost calling the poster and the company stupid for moving away from Domino.
As you've pointed out, it surely wasn't meant that way but then this is an example of the perceptions of IBM, especially when discussing Domino. Both Ed and Alan have posted, Ed to refute what the original poster was saying (how is that helpful in this context?), and Alan with at best a curt question that didn't appear to be genuinely wanting a response.
All the questions you've asked are completely valid and need answering although, by the sounds of things, in the original case on this thread it was down to Microsoft persuading the hierarchy that their products were better. We know that's not true, but unless IBM get involved how do they know that. A lot of CEOs will listen to third parties ahead of their own IT staff, as in-house IT staff are perceived to have their own prejudices (as in they 'do' Domino so they're not going to want to change it).
